The Introduction
The ongoing attempt by the Oyo State government and House of Assembly to amend the hierarchical structure of the Council of Obas and Chiefs through the Council of Obas and Chiefs (Further Amendment) Bill, 2025, is a sensitive matter that demands careful consideration. It is essential to uphold history and avoid actions that may degrade the cultural heritage of Oyo State.
Historical Context
A review of history reveals that Ibadan and Ogbomoso were historically under the suzerainty of the Alaafin. The story of Toyeje Akanni Alebiosu provides valuable insight into this relationship. Oluyole, a legendary warrior whose name is synonymous with Ibadan, was the grandson of Alaafin Abiodun Adegoolu through Princess Agbonrin. He served as Basorun of Oyo and simultaneously led Ibadan during the reign of Alaafin Atiba. This historical connection highlights the supreme role of the Alaafin in the traditional hierarchy of Oyo State.
Modern Developments
In more recent times, the late Alaafin Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi III played a significant role in shaping the status of other traditional rulers. In December 1976, he petitioned the military government of Old Oyo State to grant the Olubadan and Soun permission to wear beaded crowns, further solidifying the Alaafin’s influence and leadership in the traditional council.
Preservation of Hierarchy
The proposed amendment to make the Alaafin, Olubadan, and Soun concurrent chairmen of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs threatens to undermine the historical significance of the Alaafin’s role. Such a move risks eroding the cultural heritage and traditional hierarchy that has been carefully preserved over centuries. The state government and its agents must avoid actions that degrade history and diminish the Alaafin’s supreme position.
Appreciation to President Tinubu
Special thanks are extended to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for granting the new Alaafin, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade Elewu Etu I, a warm reception at the Presidential Villa. This gesture underscores the continued recognition of the Alaafin’s importance in Nigeria’s cultural and historical landscape.
Preserving the historical and cultural integrity of Oyo State’s traditional institutions is vital for maintaining the legacy of its revered leaders.
